Where is the Lavaredo 50K decided?
Between Col Gallina and Passo Giau, with the race half done.
The biggest leg is the first, and it is the longest stretch between aid stations. Cortina to Malga Travenanzes is 17 km with 1,154 m of climbing, more than a third of the whole race’s work. The biggest climb of the course is on it: about 500 m, steep, soon after Cortina. At the time-limit pace you reach Malga Travenanzes at twenty past twelve on Friday.
The leg on to Col Gallina is shorter but no gentler. It starts with a steep climb of about 340 m straight out of Malga Travenanzes, then drops steeply before the col, where half the work is done. Its cut-off comes six hours after the start and is nearly as close as the one at Passo Giau: at an even pace a finish under 11:29 makes it. At the time-limit pace you are at Col Gallina at twenty past two.
Col Gallina to Passo Giau is the hardest leg kilometre for kilometre, though not by much: 588 m of climbing in 7.6 km, most of it in two steep climbs back to back soon after Col Gallina. Passo Giau has the tightest cut-off on the course, eight hours after the start: at an even pace, only a finish under 11:26 makes it. At the time-limit pace you reach the pass at twenty past four on Friday afternoon.
After Passo Giau the climbing is nearly over: one short, very steep climb just past the pass, then mostly downhill, with a steep drop at the end, to Rifugio Croda da Lago. At the refuge more than four fifths of the work is done; at the time-limit pace it is ten past six in the evening.
The finish is all downhill. From Rifugio Croda da Lago the last leg drops 943 m in 9 km to Cortina, two steep descents back to back and then the run in through Mortisa. At the time-limit pace you finish at eight in the evening.
