Where is the CCC decided?
From Trient to La Flégère: the climb over Les Tseppes and the climb up from Vallorcine, late in the race.
The climb out of Trient to Les Tseppes is the biggest of the course, 730 m in 3.8 km, and steep. It drops steeply to Vallorcine, and the next leg climbs again, past the Col des Montets and Tête de Béchar, nearly 1,000 m in all up to La Flégère. These two legs come back to back, with 70 % of the effort already behind you. Kilometre for kilometre they are the hardest of the race after the first. At the time-limit pace you start the climb out of Trient at twenty to five on Saturday morning and reach La Flégère late in the morning.
Before that comes the night. Half the effort is done by Champex-Lac, which you reach at twenty past midnight at the time-limit pace. The longest leg of the course follows: 16.5 km over the climb to La Giete and down to Trient, all of it in the small hours.
After La Flégère the race is downhill to the end. The last leg drops 859 m in 7.2 km, with almost no climbing. It opens with the biggest descent of the course, and the drop into Chamonix after it is steep too. Kilometre for kilometre it is the easiest leg of the race, and the only one that is nearly all descent.
The single hardest leg is the first. From Courmayeur to Refuge Bertone the course climbs 1,436 m in 13.7 km, over two big climbs. The one straight out of Courmayeur is steep, and the one to Tête de la Tronche is very steep, the steepest of the course’s big climbs. Kilometre for kilometre that leg is more than a quarter harder than the average, and it holds about a sixth of the whole effort. At the time-limit pace you reach the refuge at ten to two on Friday afternoon.
